Why You Should Reconsider Burying Your Pets: Legal and Practical Insights

A respectful pet burial scene with a cross

Walking my dogs through our usual route around the apartment complex, I let them wander off to sniff what looked like a large log or tree branch. After they were done sniffing, I noticed a cross made of twigs and a circle encompassing the log. My heart sank—someone had buried their pet.

The makeshift "graveyard" wasn't very big. It could have been a well-meaning resident attempting to bury a squirrel, opossum, or bird. But my mind couldn't help but hope they hadn't buried their own household pet.

Seeing this little grave in the well-kept lawn of an apartment complex made me realize that many people might not know it's actually illegal to bury pets on private property in Illinois without following specific guidelines. Why is it illegal? Let me give you a few hints.

If you don't coat the deceased pet and burial items with lime, they WILL attract scavengers, and the remains could be dug up. What you'll find left at the grave site could be more distressing than the actual burial of your pet. So, what are the rules?

In Illinois, there are specific guidelines for burying pets on private property. According to the Illinois Dead Animal Disposal Act, pet owners must bury their pets at least two feet below ground to prevent scavengers from disturbing the remains and to minimize health risks. While the use of lime is recommended to aid decomposition and reduce odors, it is not legally required.

If a person buries their pet without covering it with lime, the decomposition process may take longer, and there could be a stronger odor. Additionally, there might be a higher risk of scavengers disturbing the burial site. It's also important to ensure that the burial site is at a safe distance from water sources like wells, streams, and lakes to avoid contamination.

Non-compliance with these regulations can result in fines or other penalties, especially if the burial poses a public health risk. It's always a good idea to check with local government or health departments for any additional regulations or guidelines specific to your area.

The Problem: Uninformed Pet Burials

Many pet owners are unaware of the legal and practical implications of burying their pets on private property. This lack of knowledge can lead to improper burials, attracting scavengers, and posing health risks to the community.

The Solution: Educate and Follow Guidelines

To ensure a respectful and safe burial for your beloved pet, it's crucial to follow the guidelines set by the Illinois Dead Animal Disposal Act. Bury your pet at least two feet below ground, use lime to aid decomposition and reduce odors, and choose a burial site away from water sources. By doing so, you can prevent scavengers from disturbing the remains and minimize health risks.

Final Thoughts

Burying your pet is a deeply personal decision, but it's essential to be informed about the legal and practical aspects. By following the guidelines, you can ensure a respectful and safe burial for your beloved companion. Remember, it's always best to check with local authorities for any additional regulations or guidelines specific to your area.
